Finding sustainable manufacturers in today's climate is not only simple but also cost effective. In this article we'll explore how.

Give before you get
Networking has always been and remains the best way to meet reliable contacts. The best approach to networking that I've learned over the years is not to go into a networking event with an agenda to attain something, but to give something.
The power of networking is simple. You help people to build trust with them (and because it's good to help others), and by doing so you are investing in your network. When the time comes you can connect with one of these contacts and ask them if they know any sustainable and ethical suppliers/manufacturers/consultants/etc. And if you have done a good job in building trust and investing in your network, you'll be rewarded with a contact.
Try this out for the next 12 months. You'll see for yourself how powerful this approach is to networking and getting the right connections.
Alibaba
Alibaba is the largest supplier and manufacturer network in the world. It was set up by a group of Chinese entrepreneurs headed by Jack Ma, to help Chinese manufacturers connect with American retailers. Therefore on Alibaba you will predominantly (almost exclusively) find Chinese manufacturers.
Historically, China has not been well know for it's environmental conservatism or sustainable business practices. However, in recent years the Chinese government has been pushing an environmental protection agenda. For instance, at certain times of the year they will force manufacturing to be complete halted for a period of days, to allow the air to clear (literally). This is only a small gesture in the scheme of how much pollution China generates as the manufacturing hub of the world. However, it has sparked an interest in Chinese manufacturers to invest in sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices.
We are finding more and more manufacturers are now offering sustainable manufacturing to Australian retailers. And this trend will continue as the world switches to sustainability over the coming years.
